Summer of Protection

Today, or I guess tonight, we're going to stray a little from fashion and the sorts, and shift our view towards the face and makeup side of this blog which rarely shows itself.

Unless you live in Australia, it's most likely summertime where you live and I assume the sun shines and shows no mercy. Those two characteristics of summer are the reasons why I am a known lover of summer. The only problem is that too much damages my skin very badly and very quickly if I don't do anything about it. Combine that with a sweat covered face and it's just a recipe for disaster.

Above all things, if you are sweating even mildly, hydrate!!! All of that sweat pouring out from your pores is water and if your body's water supply does not replenish itself, dehydration and unhappy skin hides just around the corner. Another reason to keep yourself hydrated  lies within the common knowledge that lots of water means healthy skin. Most people know this, but if you're like me and you don't enjoy drinking loads of water, you tend to forget how important it is both for your skin and your health. (Tip: Try to drink 6-8 8 ounce glasses of water or take half of your body weight and drink that amount in ounces- 100 lbs.= 50 ounces)

Another commonly known and easy way to protect yourself in the summer months is the use of high SPF sunscreen. I strongly emphasize high SPF. The higher the SPF the less likely you are to burn, or be affected by the suns rays. Skin-wise, a lower SPF will cause sunburn which is a huge no-no for your skin. And don't just apply it once in the morning and think you're done for the day. No, especially if you are going into the water, whether it's the pool or the ocean, once you get out re-apply the sunscreen. Most sunscreens are not water-proof and if they are they don't last very long following getting out of the water. We are focusing more towards summer, but since we are on the topic of sunscreen, it helps to apply sunscreen 365 days a year. Even on cloudy, cold days the suns rays peek through and shine onto your skin. By applying it year-round you are lessening your chances of pre-mature wrinkles and other possible skin damages.

As much as some of us may not like it, reducing the amount or not even wearing makeup is another helpful way to protect and keep your skin healthy during the summer. If we focus on the looks, unless your makeup is water-proof, which is a total pain to remove, sweat and face makeup is not an ideal combination. It gets blotchy and oily and for some it's not a good look and hides the actually beauty that we all hold. I advise you to stay away from face makeup as much as you can. It may reduce the amount of breakouts that appear on your face and personally, I think it makes my face get a subtle JLo glow. By all means go right ahead and dab on some lip gloss and swipe some mascara on those gorgeous eyelashes, but I believe straying from face makeup, like bb creams or foundations, will heighten your natural summer glow. Another plus to staying away from makeup is you will become more accustomed to seeing your natural face, thus becoming more comfortable in your own skin (if you aren't already), and you'll not even want to wear makeup as much as before. I view it as a win win situation.

Want more protection? Try a hat! It's become a more popular accessory recently and its both useful and stylish. Sun hats, baseball caps, fedoras, you name it, you wear it. A majority of the time a hat works well into any summer outfit, and knowing that it's shielding your face from the sun and preventing any type of sun damage is such a lovely thing to be aware of. Baseball caps are my personal favourite; I find that they match well with most outfits and I can't pass up the opportunity to represent my Yankees. All I'm saying is, if you want an accessory and a protectant all in one, go straight to the hat section in Bloomingdales. I guarantee you'll find your perfect summer hat.

All in all, the premise of today's talk is to educate you on the importance of skin protection. Water, and sunscreen are an absolute must in my books. You have nothing to lose if you follow those two rules. No makeup and hats are examples of other ways to help your skin, but do not do it if you don't want to. Do what you want, just keep that skin happy.
